Chinese Medicine For Chronic Pain
Recent research published in the summer of 2012 suggests that Traditional Chinese Medicine may be used to help those suffering with chronic pain. Namely, it can help people reduce the number of drugs they are taking to manage the pain and therefore reduce nasty side-effects of long term pain killer use.

The study conducted in America took 186 patients suffering with a chronic pain syndrome known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). TMD is a term used to cover any dysfunction to the muscle that attaches the jaw to the skull. The studies participants were divided into two groups; those who were taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs - e.g. Ibuprofen) and those taking narcotics (such as morphine). These two groups were then further subdivided into the treatment group (that received Traditional Chinese Medicine) and a self-care group (who took care of themselves).
Patients in the treatment group were given 20 weeks of treatment using both acupuncture and herbs in order to help them reduce their pain killer medication intake.
Results showed that the participants pain scores and pain killer intake reduced significantly over the 20 week period. In some instances, namely those participants on addictive substances such as morphine, so little or no reduction in pain killer consumption however their pain scores still decreased suggesting that the Traditional Chinese Medicine was treating the pain successfully.
